A nutrition coach is a nutritionist or dietitian PLUS coach, counselor, mentor and motivator. They are professionals from diverse backgrounds and education who work with individuals and groups in a client-centered process to facilitate and empower clients to achieve personal health and wellness goals.
Nutrition coaches advise on matters of food and nutrition but have an extra superpower in coaching. You could know all there is about food, but then comes that part where you actually have to do it and keep doing it. Coaching is the bridge between taking what you know, teaching you what you need to know, and putting it into action successfully. It is a critical component to losing weight, and what you need to feel supported at every level in becoming who you want to be by building the awareness, knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary for long-term success.
Dietitians, or registered dietitians, are state-licensed and highly trained in medical nutrition therapy which provides clinical care for conditions such as diabetes, pre-diabetes, metabolic diseases, or outpatient care which require the highest level of training and care plan. Think of an RD as an incredible resource for “treatment” for various diseases and weight struggles using laser-focused nutrition advice.
We need dietitians, we love dietitians! However, they are typically not trained on the psychology of eating unless they specialize in eating disorders, which isn’t super common. And even if they were, dietitians do not always have mentoring or coaching skills. (Trust me, I went to school for nutrition, I should know). Many of my clients have worked with talented dietitians before coming to me, but their work together simply didn’t go deep enough to get to their root issues with food and weight, their mindset around food and their relationship with food was still an issue. I personally have dietitians on my team but for clinical nutrition projects such as diabetes management for that very reason. It really takes a very skilled professional to help you with deep struggles with food and weight.
